Laundry Tips and Tricks


Why spend hundreds of dollars a year on dry cleaning bills when you can hand wash your cashmere and silk garments?  Hand washing is better for both the environment and your pocket book, and requires a minimum amount of investment.  Keep reading for my favorite products and tips.

Recommended products: Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo ($19 for 16 fl. oz.), Nordstrom Lingerie Wash in lavender scent ($18 for 32 fl. oz.), Mrs. Meyers lavender laundry detergent ($15.99 for 64 fl. oz.), Real Simple Mesh Wash Bags ($7.99 for 2, from Bed Bath & Beyond), Compact Accordion Dryer Rack ($19.99 from Bed Bath & Beyond), OxiClean Versatile Stain Removal Powder.

Cashmere: Fill sink or basin with cool water and add one to two capfuls of the wool and cashmere detergent.  Soak for 5-10 minutes, then agitate gently.  Rinse well and press water from fabric.  Roll in a towel to remove excess water.  Lay flat on metal drying rack.

Silk and other delicates*: Fill sink or basin with cool water and add one to two capfuls of the lingerie detergent.  Soak for 5-10 minutes, then agitate gently.  Alternatively, place delicates in mesh bags and machine wash on delicate cycle using cool water.  Rinse well and press water from fabric.  Roll in a towel to remove excess water.  Hang on metal drying rack or hanger.

Denim: Machine wash inside out on delicate cycle using cold water and one cup of white vinegar.  Hang dry.

Sweat stain removal: Mix OxiClean with warm water, in the ratio as directed on the packaging.  Soak stain with OxiClean solution and rub gently. Let sit for 10 minutes.  Machine wash in warm water.
